" People often complain that music is too ambiguous, that what they should think when they hear it is so unclear, whereas everyone understands words. With me, it is exactly the opposite, and not only with regard to an entire speech but also with individual words. These, too, seem to me so ambiguous, so vague, so easily misunderstood in comparison to genuine music, which fills the soul with a thousand things better than words. The thoughts which are expressed to me by music that I love are not too indefinite to be put into words, but on the contrary, too definite. "( Read more... )

Can I just say that I'm a little annoyed about this whole Skype thing? It's the only way I can keep in touch with my aunt and uncle in France and I think Skype has been around long enough that they would be able to handle downtime a little better. And I guess I'm just uncomfortable communicating with people when I can't see them face to face. Or at least video screen to video screen.

Man, I kind of hate fireworks. They're really pretty to look at but sometimes they can get pretty loud. Last night's were great, though - I think this is really the first time I've ever actually had a good time on July 4th since I was a kid. Ha, that sounds kind of sad now that I read it. I mean, last year I was just with a couple of friends but it was nothing huge. This year was a whole lot better.
Anyway, I'm thinking about one of those campaigning jobs over the summer so that I can get some more money and keep working on the cello before I start looking for positions with an orchestra or something like that. I've never actually done anything like that so I don't know if I would be good at it, but ... who knows.

Does anybody else think it's kind of funny (in an ironic sort of way) that on one hand we're talking about opening up borders for the soccer team and on the other, peace talks in Galveston are getting blown up? I don't really talk about politics much, but I think it's interesting. I know a lot of people have already said it before but I'd like to be able to go home and see my family.
But in happier news...! Next week marks my last week with the temp agency. I bought a new cello. I'm going to play it. And then I'll just, I don't know. I'll see what happens.

I tried to keep this quiet so I waited at least 24 hours after the fact. But here it is: I'm thirty. For those of you who don't know, just a day and a half ago I was twenty-nine. So we all know what that means. Please, no celebrations. I never really celebrated my birthday before and I don't really see the point now...

I am going to put this in writing so that everyone knows: I am never going to a club again.

Sometimes I wish I could move out of this apartment and this district. Last night there was a stabbing at a bar that's down the street from my complex. A stabbing, can you believe that? I mean, I can believe it, but...I don't know. I don't want to get stabbed, but then again I don't go to bars that much so I think I am probably out of harm's way.
The really annoying thing is that now I'm going to have to find an alternate route to the subway station since most of the area has been blocked off by caution tape.

Thomas sits in front of the screen, a little awkwardly, trying to smile. He seems unsure as to whether or not the camera is on, but finally comes to the conclusion that yes, he is on camera. Although Thomas will be speaking out loud, his hands will be doing their own bizarre combination of American and French Sign Language.
Um. Bonj -- hi. Sorry, this is my first one of these...things. As you can see, I didn't buy the hovercat. I really thought about it, though. I was going to. Anyway. I have a question.
Thomas pauses to readjust the camera.
Do you find it... He seems to be searching for the right word, his hands flutter and then settle. Hard, do you find it hard to meet people here? The city's overcrowded and yet I still feel like I only know a handful of people. I guess that is why I'm making this post. To say hello. I've lived in this apartment for quite some time now and I don't even really know the people who live around me. Well. That's hi. I just wanted to say hello.
He leans forward to turn off the camera, then stops for a second.
Oh, one more thing. Does anyone know of any good music stores? Um, ones that sell instruments? Or fix them? For a relatively low price? I'm not exactly...rolling in money. Thank you.
Finally, Thomas shuts off the camera.

I have this weird urge to buy a hovercat. Maybe I could use the company.

This kind of thing makes me glad that I have no friends and that I don't leave my apartment. Ha.

I liked Sundays a lot more when I had my old job. Maybe I should reevaluate.
